When he's not rubbing elbows with Mickey, Zach enjoys reading fantasy novels, retro video games, theatre, puppetry, and the films of Tim Burton. In addition to elevators and ramps throughout the building, we offer additional accessible entrances at the Emerson Education Center and Members Entrance, located closest to accessible parking spaces. Sliding into the DMs of a magician slated to perform at the Castle was once a sort of impolite but possibly effective means of gaining access. But now the Magic Castle’s upcoming show schedule only stretches about a week ahead, which makes it pretty impractical, too. That said, if you show genuine interest, you never know when you’ll find a membership-toting magician who’s sympathetic to your cause. Members can hand out guest passes like candy; get one and you’re in, though expect to pay upwards of $75 of dinner alone.
Through two games, the Magic have made 17 of their 72 three point attempts. Instead of spending years practicing your craft as a wannabe magician, you can gain access to the Magic Castle via these ways below (ranked from easiest to most difficult). Everyone from grandparents on down can have fun at The Magic House, but the exhibits are mostly designed for younger children.

One common mistake is overlooking the structural stability of your chandelier. Ensure that your design is properly supported and anchored to prevent it from collapsing or sagging over time. Use additional blocks or supports as needed to reinforce the framework and maintain the integrity of your chandelier. The size and location of your chandelier will influence its design and proportions. A large chandelier might be more suitable for spacious areas, while a smaller one can add a delicate touch to a smaller room. Take measurements and visualize how your chandelier will interact with the surrounding environment.

However, normal torches are too boring to decorate the base, especially since it will be impossible to light up the ceiling in case you have a tall roof. For rooms with low ceilings, choose chandeliers with a more compact and streamlined design. This will prevent the chandelier from overpowering the space and make the room feel more open and airy. If you have high ceilings, opt for larger and more elaborate chandeliers to fill the vertical space and create a sense of grandeur. This will prevent the chandelier from appearing too small or disproportionate in the room.
Create Focal Points
Collaborating with other builders can not only showcase your chandelier but also foster creativity and inspire new ideas. It was built for engineer and contractor Lynn Atkinson,[3] who commissioned the property for his wife. She found it "pretentious", so the couple never lived there.[4] The house, located on 10 acres (4 hectares), with gardens designed by Henri Samuel, later was owned by Arnold Kirkeby and then Jerry Perenchio. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence. I drove past the house on my way to an event and immediately turned around in order to check it out.

Built for railroad titan James J. Hill, this 36,000-square-foot Gilded Age mansion was once the largest private residence in the state. With 13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, 16 chandeliers, a reception hall nearly 100 feet long, sophisticated technical systems, and a two-story, skylit art gallery, the house was a symbol of success, personal taste, and family life. The Sheats–Goldstein Residence is a home designed and built between 1961 and 1963 by American architect John Lautner in the Beverly Crest neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, a short distance up the hill from the Beverly Hills city limit.

The Great Northern was the first transcontinental built without public money and just a few land grants, and was one of the few transcontinental railroads not to go bankrupt. During the Panic of 1873, a number of railroads, including the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (StP&P), had gone bankrupt. The StP&P in particular was caught in an almost hopeless legal muddle. For three years, Hill researched the StP&P and finally concluded that it would be possible to make a good deal of money off the StP&P, provided that the initial capital could be found.

Neill’s house, the first residence built on Summit Avenue, sat on one of the lots acquired by Hill, who razed it to make room for a mansion designed by the renowned Boston firm Peabody, Stearns and Furber. The architects and over 400 craftsmen began working on 240 Summit Avenue in 1888. Hill had strong opinions about how his house should be built and he closely monitored the progress of construction. When Peabody, Stearns and Furber failed to communicate their client’s specific orders to the stonecutters working on the house, Hill fired the architects and turned to Irving and Casson, another Boston firm, to complete and furnish the interior.

The church preserved it well and did not make any significant alterations, although most of the original furniture was sold during this period. In 1961, the United States Department of the Interior designated the house a National Historic Landmark. The Minnesota Historical Society acquired the house in 1978, after the Archdiocese consolidated its offices elsewhere. The interior features an art gallery that housed Hill's collection of painting and sculpture. It even had a pipe organ, installed after someone suggested to Hill that other wealthy people had pipe organs in their homes.

The property, built in the 1930s, belonged to the estate of Lee Phillip Bell, who died earlier this year and was best known for co-creating the soap operas The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless with her late husband, William. It was previously owned by other celebrities, including actor Charles Boyer and Howard Hughes, who leased the mansion to his onetime lover Katharine Hepburn. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.
In 1879, Hill and partners formed a company that transformed the bankrupt St. Paul & Pacific Railroad into the highly successful St. Paul, Minnesota & Manitoba Railway Company. He was elevated to company president a few years later, and his farsighted management skills earned him a solid reputation. At the age of nine, he lost sight in his right eye due to a bow and arrow injury; at fourteen, his father died and Hill moved to St. Paul three years later, working as a shipping clerk on the Mississippi River.

Managed by MAK Center for Art and Architecture, the compound is currently open to the public without reservations and hosts art exhibitions, including installations by Alison Knowles and Yoko Ono during Frieze Week. After James J. Hill died in 1916 and his wife died in 1921, the children eventually moved out. In 1925, four of the daughters purchased the house from the estate and donated it to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. The church used it for the next fifty-three years as space for offices, residences, and a teacher's college for women.
As his national reputation grew, Hill was also amassing an important collection of art. In 1882 he decided it was time to build himself a residence worthy of his status and large enough for his family of twelve. He acquired two lots on Summit Avenue, a fashionable street that had long been home to St. Paul’s wealthiest residents and leading citizens, including the Reverend Edward Duffield Neill, who had served as Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary.

In the Hill House these are most striking in the porte-cochere. Richardsonian Romanesque is also characterized by an emphasis on horizontal lines and heaviness emphasized here by the deep window reveals. Rooflines become complicated and picturesque through the use of projecting pavilions, including sleeping porches on the northern end and 8 chimney stacks. In 1978, the Archdiocese transferred the mansion to the Minnesota Historical Society, which preserved the building and developed educational activities. Since then, the house has been open to the general public for tours, interpretive programs, and special events.

Hill teamed up with Norman Kittson (the man he had merged steamboat businesses with), Donald Smith,[6] George Stephen and John Stewart Kennedy. Together they not only bought the railroad, they also vastly expanded it by bargaining for trackage rights with the Northern Pacific Railway. In May 1879, the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway Co. (StPM&M) formed—with James J. Hill as general manager. Designed by Pierre Koenig, it's often called Case Study House #22. Its minimalist style and linear design elements connect with the grid of Los Angeles streets which can be seen from the windows. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955.

While many of these landmark homes are privately held, occupied by Hollywood A-listers, a few of them have been preserved and are open to the public. We’ve rounded up five of our favorites that are well worth a visit. By the late 1870s, James Hill’s growing fortunes and family required a larger home that reflected his elevated status within the community.
Hill avoided this by investing a large portion of the railroad's profit back into the railroad itself—and charged those investments to operating expense. It was at this point that Hill went from general manager to the official president of StPM&M, and thereafter decided to expand the rail lines. When he was looking for the best path for one of his tracks to take, he went on horseback and scouted it personally. In 1880, its net worth was $728,000 (equal to $22,984,717 today); in 1885 it was $25,000,000, equal to $847,777,778 today. Designed by architect Richard Meier, this complex occupies an entire hilltop just off fabled Sunset Blvd.

Typical of Lautner's work, the project was approached from an idea and a structure was derived that addressed the challenges of the site. Not only is the beautiful craftsman style Gamble house an amazing place to visit for architecture fans, but movie fans will appreciate it too. The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. Retractable iron grilles on the windows and doors provided security for the collection and the family's other valuable possessions. Much of the art collection was later given to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, which Hill helped found in 1915. Grades 9-12 Tuesday and Wednesday, May-September 2023 Summit Avenue Walking Tour discusses the business and civic leaders who built St. Paul, and transformed the Northwest, Gilded Age architectural styles and ongoing preservation work in the neighborhood.
James J. Hill was a railroad executive who came from an impoverished childhood to found his own company in 1866. He would eventually helm the Great Northern Railway Company, which was responsible for huge railroad expansions in the U.S. Hill would acquire other companies, though he faced legal action as the result of violating antitrust laws. The Archdiocese transfers the house to the Minnesota Historical Society for $250,000 for the purposes of historic preservation and cultural programming.
This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. Neutra VDL Studio and ResidencesFamed midcentury architect Richard Neutra conceived this glass-walled dwelling in Silver Lake with his son Dion to serve as their family home. Completed in 1932, the 2,000-square-foot structure burned down in the 1963 fire and was rebuilt by Dion with oversight from his father.

The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with.
A reception was held on September 5, 1895, for Monsignor Francesco Satolli, the first Apostolic delegate to the United States from the Vatican. When President William McKinley visited in 1899, Mary Hill remarked in her journal that the evening was pleasant and quiet. Four of the Hills' daughters were married in the large drawing room. More than three hundred skilled craftsmen built the house over the next three years. In order to generate business for his railroad, Hill encouraged European immigrants to settle along his line, often paying for Russian and Scandinavian settlers to travel from Europe.
The estate is currently owned by California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, which runs tours every Saturday from 11 a.m. The mansion at 240 Summit has a basement, three floors, and an attic. In 1887, the Great Northern's first company headquarters building was constructed in St. Paul. It was designed by James Brodie, who also built the Hill house on Summit Avenue. The 1887 building was converted between 2000 and 2004 to a 53 unit condo in the Historic Lowertown District of St. Paul.[26] Hill had seen the devastation done downtown by the Great Chicago Fire. The theory was that if a fire broke out and the ceiling caved in, the sand would drop and retard or suppress the fire.
James Jerome Hill (September 16, 1838 – May 29, 1916) was a Canadian-American railroad director. He was the chief executive officer of a family of lines headed by the Great Northern Railway, which served a substantial area of the Upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains, and Pacific Northwest. Experience Christmas, 1910—both upstairs and downstairs—in the sumptuous Gilded Age mansion of railroad titan James J. Hill. Admission includes self-guided access to holiday-themed exhibits and a 60-minute guided tour highlighting holiday stories and memories from both the Hill family and their staff. The building was designed by architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
This translates to conducting modeling and simulation to prove out, in part, that the architecture will work. Development was approved in July 1970, and it was given the designation ZAGM-86A, the Z indicating its initial development status.

The original designation number remained, but the name changed to reflect the new mission, becoming the Air Launched Cruise Missile, or ALCM. A digitized image of an area is mapped and then inserted into a TLAM mission. During the flight the missile will verify that the images that it has stored correlates with the image it sees below itself. Based on comparison results the missile's inertial navigation system is updated and the missile corrects its course. A hypersonic cruise missile travels at least five times the speed of sound (Mach 5).
Design
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force has aimed thousands of missiles at the closest American and Japanese bases. To intervene, U.S. and Japanese forces must fight their way through these missiles as well as the PLA Navy’s submarines. The MDR’s policy direction does not seem to address who will manage the department’s missile defeat enterprise. While embracing of the full means of countering and defeating missile threats has much to commend it, an unbalanced pivot to “missile defeat” carries could have pitfalls. A prudent “fly before you buy” approach should apply to exotic non-kinetic and left-of-launch capabilities just as it does to hit-to-kill interceptors. Reliance on highly secret solutions that sacrifices deterrence for warfighting may be necessary, but nonkinetic and left-of-launch capabilities could be unproven, untestable, incapable of demonstration, and unsusceptible to foreign military sales.

RGM / UGM-109E Tomahawk (Block IV TLAM-E) is the latest member in the Tomahawk missile family. It carries a 1,000lb-class unitary warhead for a maximum range of 900nmi. RGM / UGM-109C (Block III TLAM-C) is a conventional unitary variant, carrying a 1,000lb-class warhead. RGM / UGM-109D (Block III TLAM-D) is a submunitions dispenser variant armed with 166 combined-effects bomblets. Finally, senior US military leadership must stay focused on this project—and on achieving it in parallel with other projects.
The first example, similar to the original SCAD in most ways, flew for the first time in March 1976, and its new guidance system was first tested that September. Compared to the models that entered service in the 1980s, the A-model had a distinctive look; the nose tapered sharply to a triangular point giving it a shark-like appearance, compared to the later models which had a more rounded conventional appearance. After achieving flight, the missile's wings are unfolded for lift, the airscoop is exposed and the turbofan engine is employed for cruise flight. Over water, the Tomahawk uses inertial guidance or GPS to follow a preset course; once over land, the missile's guidance system is aided by terrain contour matching (TERCOM). Terminal guidance is provided by the Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation (DSMAC) system or GPS, producing a claimed circular error probable of about 10 meters.
Future of the ALCM
Although the concept was proven sound and the 500-megawatt engine finished a successful test run in 1961, no airworthy device was ever completed. Modern cruise missiles are capable of traveling at high subsonic, supersonic, or hypersonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory. Korean Central News Agency released photos showing at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks on a runway. State media said North Korea’s missile administration on Friday conducted a ‘power test’ for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile.

The 2019 review also neglected UAS as a species of air defense, or what the new review calls “missile-related” threats. As seen in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Iranian attacks in 2019, and the Ukrainian war this year, that neglect is no longer tenable. Lockheed’s AGM-158 JASSM provided the Air Force a stealthy option to strike targets at ranges of up to 500 nm. Although the AGM-158 fell far short of the AGM-86C conventional air-launched cruise missile, the Air Force allowed the latter to be retired from service with no direct replacement in November 2019. That gap will be addressed partially by the fielding in 2024 of the AGM-158D, a new version of the JASSM with a range of up to 1,000 nm and the same radar cross section.
In 1944, during World War II, Germany deployed the first operational cruise missiles. The V-1, often called a flying bomb, contained a gyroscope guidance system and was propelled by a simple pulsejet engine, the sound of which gave it the nickname of "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug". Accuracy was sufficient only for use against very large targets (the general area of a city), while the range of 250 km was significantly lower than that of a bomber carrying the same payload. The main advantages were speed (although not sufficient to outperform contemporary propeller-driven interceptors) and expendability.
North Korea says it tested ‘super-large’ cruise missile warhead and new anti-aircraft missile
Externally, all the AGM86-C variations are the same dimensions as the nuclear equipped AGM–86B. The base AGM-86C and AGM-86D have a launch weight of 1,750 kg, whereas the Block 1 weighs 200 kg more, at 1,950 kg. The warhead for the base AGM-86C is a high explosive (HE) unit weighing 910 kg; the Block 1 is a HE weighing 1,360 kg; and the Block 2 is a HE/penetration weighing 545 kg. It has a reduced range (compared to the AGM-86B) of 1,200 km as a result of the heavier payload of conventional explosives. All variants of the AGM-86 missile are powered by a Williams F107 turbofan jet engine that propels it at sustained subsonic speeds and can be launched from aircraft at both high and low altitudes. The missile deploys its folded wings, tail surfaces and engine inlet after launch.
Tomahawks were subsequently used extensively in Iraq to enforce “no-fly zone” operations in the early 1990s and during the Iraq War (2003–11). They were also used in Bosnia (1995), Libya (1996 and 2011), Sudan (1998), Yemen (2009), and Afghanistan (1998 and during the Afghanistan War, which began in 2001). NORAD and NORTHCOM held a wargame called Vista Rampart in March and April to further refine cruise missile defense concepts.
Nuclear modernization is a priority for the Department of Defense—there is no doubt about that. But the addition of another nuclear acquisition program will further strain management, funding, and attention. Ensuring no harm is done to schedules for the ongoing nuclear modernization programs must be a priority. The CSIS Missile Defense Project’s monthly newsletter has info on the project’s latest publications, events, and missile defense news. The CALCM was also used in Operation Desert Fox in 1998, Operation Allied Force in 1999, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
It can also elude detection by radar because it has a small cross section and operates at low altitudes. Once it reaches land, the Tomahawk uses inertial and terrain-contour-matching (TERCOM) radar guidance, in which a map stored on the missile’s computer is continually compared with the actual terrain to locate the missile’s position relative to the target. As the TERCOM scans the landscape, the Tomahawk missile is capable of twisting and turning like a radar-evading fighter plane, skimming the landscape at an altitude of only 30–90 metres (100–300 feet). The 2019 Missile Defense Review highlighted the need to focus on near-peer cruise missiles and directed the Pentagon to recommend an organization to have acquisition authority of cruise missile defense for the homeland. The designation requirement also appeared in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, but the Pentagon has yet to choose what organization will be in charge of the effort. For this role, the accuracy of the original INS guidance hardware was not enough.
Lockheed Martin's AGM-158A won and a contract for further development was awarded in 1998. Planners wouldn’t have to guess what kinds of dangers a ship might face. Whether the threat is a ballistic or cruise missile, a bomber, a warship or an anti-ship battery on land—the SM-6 can hit it. There are forces at play—bureaucratic, budgetary, and programmatic—that could stymie the SLCM-N if Congress does not keep an eye on its progress and, at times, push its development in certain directions. For example, US lawmakers should press officials to examine the suitability of existing missiles, or those under development, as starting points to build from.
Meanwhile, the Air Force had also issued a requirement for a version with a much longer 1,500 nautical miles (2,800 km; 1,700 mi) range. This would allow the bombers to launch their missiles from far off the Russian coast, placing it outside the range of the interceptors as well. To reach the intended range, this new Extended Range Version (ERV) would have to be lengthened to contain more fuel, or external fuel tanks would have to be added. Either change would make it too large to fit on the SRAM launchers and the extended-fuselage version would be too large to fit in the bomb bay of the new B-1 Lancer bomber. The Air Force intended to replace the original ALCM with the new version at some future date.
The 5.6-metre- (18.4-foot-) long missile has a range of up to approximately 2,400 km (about 1,500 miles) and can travel as fast as 885 km (550 miles) per hour. While it takes time to assess the results of a weapons test, he said they are usually ready much quicker than nine months after they happen. But Taiwan can win, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. CSIS recently ran a series of war games simulating a Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2026 and varying degrees of U.S. and Japanese intervention.
